Find out what makes the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools unique.
Show Transcript
[upbeat music] The 6 Robert F Kennedy community schools, located on the site of the famed Ambassador Hotel, serve as a home to over 4,000 students living in the surrounding neighborhood in Koreatown. This state-of-the-art complex eliminates the need for busing students to distant overcrowded schools and provides the opportunity for students in T-K through 12th grade to live and learn in their home community. My favorite thing about RFK is the opportunities that it has given me. I've been able to be active in my community, and, I've been able to know what my community is and the history behind it and I've been able to do projects around like Koreatown. The school itself has a community of a lot of students, um, who come from different backgrounds and it's just a very diverse campus. Beautiful environment. All the teachers are there for you, all your friends, they all care for you and it's just a very... it's like a second home and a second family to you. This unique complex has been designed to accommodate 6 innovative pilot community schools: The Pilot School model was designed to transform public school education by bringing schools, staff, families, and community organizers together in partnership to create and provide an enhanced academic experience. There's like six schools that have different purposes and different goals. For example, the one I go to, ASGL. So which, like, why I chose ASGL would be because of how global it is and how aware you become of the world and all, like, the current events that are going on considering we are going to be a part of the community, the global community, at one point in our lives. They get more individual attention, it seems the counselors at each school know the students well... it's just an advantage, having a small area, and the collaboration and the individual attention is is much greater than at the public schools. I think someone should choose to come to RFK because it offers you different schools such as performing arts, visual arts, global leadership and social justice. They provide you also with different AP classes, they have many extracurricular activities such as sports, Gear Up, EduCare and LACC classes. RFK are united by a social justice philosophy that honors the legacy of the late Robert F Kennedy with curriculum focused on global and educational leadership, languages, technology, visual and performing arts, and College and Career preparation. My favorite thing about coming to school is that we learn how to be Global Citizens. What that means to me is that we could become responsible, we could take action for the school and we could show leadership. The Social Justice philosophy of Robert F Kennedy where students have the opportunity to really live who they are, be themselves, explore opportunities. We all work really hard that our students understand the importance of and value of college, because many of us have come from similar backgrounds where we understand that college is a key to success, is the key to opportunity not only for themselves but for their families. RFK has given me the tools and confidence through projects and programs in order to go to college. People should come to RFK because It prepares you for college and real life. Our schools embrace diversity, cultivate creativity, foster innovation, advocate for social justice, and prepare all students for the 21st century. I think students should choose RFK because here students can be who they want to be. There are many different types of academies available to them if they want to study visual arts or performing & theater arts, or global leadership, we have an array of schools that they can choose from and each school is determined to make sure that their students are successful. I love going into the classroom, I love seeing the innovative ways that teachers are teaching, I love seeing how technology is being integrated into the curriculum. I love seeing students Skyping with somebody from across the world about a geography lesson that they just completed. It's a new change for me because when I started coming here I just came back from the Philippines and the school that I was originally supposed to go to wasn't really cut out and now like after being here for 5 years it's like the greatest choice I've ever made. Once I got here, I really loved the school so I want to stay here until I graduate high school. [upbeat music] [upbeat music] [upbeat music] [upbeat music] I am RFK We are RFK Yo soy RFK.
